I was unable to find out much of its history, only that it appears to be from a limited series commissioned by Guitar Asylum in Long Island, NY. One of the inlays also has a crack in it (the 17th). You cannot feel this while playing. The finish is amazing, it is actual mirror inlaid into the guitar, cracked from the underside so it is smooth to the touch. It's probably a bit of both. Sometimes they just screw up and put the wrong number on it and other times they grab a finished USA select to customize.
But, putting the serial number on the guitar used to be one of the last steps before shipping. Not sure about now.
